Are you still on Craigslist for the same reasons I am? Not to poke fun of people who are stuck in 2006, but because it's a site that was always meant to put the user first, built by folks with a moral compass who were not driven purely by profit maximization. Perhaps you're like me... you remember that inauguration footage with the billionaires who own all of social media now right behind Trump as he was sworn into office. Now you also refuse to engage with a type of media that is fragmenting our concentration, pitting us against each other, and uses you as a tool for extraction. You instead seek out like-minded people here instead of Facebook or Instagram.
I'm motivated and serious about starting a Misfits tribute band, with other like-minded folks who have a flexible schedule and aren't too busy to do this. I live in a very conservative part of Kansas, so I'm not going to find the people I want to start this band with here. I'm casting a net out to cities within a certain radius, to see if anyone wants to work on this project from a distance, getting together before shows to make sure we're tight. I've been playing along with the albums, which seems to be working just fine.
I've already organized my ideas into a Google Doc I can share with you, that includes resources for tribute bands, a list organized by state and country of events that would welcome a Misfits tribute band, like horror cons and film fests, etc etc etc.
About me: I grew up outside of Rochester, NY and started playing punk rock as a bassist very early on in my life, starting at around age 12. I grew up with this music, and was drawn particularly to horror punk and horror movies in general. All these years later I'm still someone who makes Halloween season last from labor day to Thanksgiving. I'm working on a PhD in trauma and am even considering a dissertation topic focusing on the effects of horror media on adolescents with trauma histories. I'm a queer, former activist, card-carrying socialist with leftist beliefs and a solid moral compass that I built myself! I came to Western Kansas to escape the rat race, and bought a house here in 2021 for a price I didn't even think you could find anymore in the USA in the 21st century. I slowly learned after moving here that it's because this part of the country is 30 years in the past. The insular nature of the people is both fascinating at times and frightening at times, but it can also be very peaceful out here... and I have no mortgage! It's helped me to accept others and understand why so many people still cling tightly to religious beliefs (comfort, sense of belonging, community). I'm not religious at all though, and can't be in a band with folks who are. I have become a daily yoga and meditation type, and need to find others for this who are doing alright right now. Not addicted to social media, not addicted to drugs, not falling apart because of the political situation right now either (you know that's exactly what this administration wants to happen, but I refuse to let them steal my happiness away from me). My heart goes out to everyone who is struggling right now. I don't think any of us could possibly have been prepared for the rise of an authoritarian government in this country, or for the major changes to our everyday habits that social media has sparked. I get it. I can help, if you want (reach out, I can offer words of wisdom and help you in your journey), but I can't have you in my band right now.
I'm open to chatting with others with varying beliefs on things, but would hope that this could turn into friendships, not just a business partnership with bandmates. So, please no Trump supporters, conservative Republicans, religious folks, anti-LGBTQ folks, alt-right folks... you get the point... I'm looking for other intelligent, well-informed, well-educated, science believers who will read a peer-reviewed journal to fill their heads with knowledge instead of turning to TikTok and Facebook for their beliefs. (--- yes I understand we may need to use social media to promote this project when we start playing out. If it is an absolute necessity then we can have my partner, who is a marketing major, run that part of the operation). Let's not lean into the more misogynistic, macho side of The Misfits,. I refuse to play the song Attitude. I'm on the fence about Last Caress, since it's such a crowd favorite. I learned that Jerry Only, when he was singing for the group, changed the lyrics of the song because he didn't want to continue singing such offensive lyrics. Also looking for someone who grew up with the music, INCLUDING the Graves albums from the 90s (yes, I know Graves ended up being a total douche, but I absolutely love those albums and I think a whole generation of Misfits fans do too. We have to play those songs).
Please please please put some thought into your response. I promise I will read and respond to each person who wants to genuinely engage in intelligent conversation. I can also send you that Google doc and a recording of my drumming. I've been playing for about a year now, and keep getting tighter every time I practice. Luckily we're not going to be playing complicated music! The image attached is a band name idea. I also went on Canva and superimposed the image onto my bass drum head. Tell me what you think! I'm open to other band name ideas.
